Drifting in Japan

Drifting in Japan - The Origins

Drifting began in Japan in the 70's identifiable through two key motorsport drivers. Kunimitsu Takahashi initially used drifting as a skill for to gain speed on mountain roads through controlling slides. Another well known driver, Keiichi Tsuchiya became recognised as "Drift King" (ドリキン, Dorikin) and is celebrated around the world for his advancement of drifting as a motorsport. He famously assisted in Initial D and Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift which are key icons within the drifting world.

As we recognise drifting today, it is the art of losing control of the rear end of the vehicle and then controlling the loss of traction. Sounds easy enough to do! There is much to learn and many avenues to take when learning to drift.
